COURSE OBJECTIVE:

To enable workers to work confidently and competently in trenches and excavations.

To enable supervisors to feel confident in the level of knowledge of the personnel entering and working trenches and excavations.


TRAINING DESIGNED FOR TYPES OF POSITIONS:

This course is aimed at all workers from labourers to engineers who are involved in trenching and excavation works.


COURSE ACCREDITATION:

This training program is a nationally registered program.
Units of competency for this training will consist of a combination of any of the 8 units listed below.

Quantum Training is VETAB registered to provide national qualifications in Civil Construction training package, including:

  • RIIOHS201A             Work Safely and follow OH&S Policies and Procedures
  • RIIWMG203A            Drain and Dewater Civil Construction Site (Not included in 2 day course)
  • RIICCM205A             Carry out manual excavation
  • RIICCM210A             Install Trench Support
  • RIICCM202A             Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services (Not included in 2 day course)
  • RIIRIS201A              Conduct Local Risk Control Processes
  • RIICFW303A             Install Primary Ground Support

EXPECTED OUTCOMES OF TRAINING:

At the completion of the course candidates would have knowledge of;

  • Legislative requirements and Risk Assessment,
  • Accidents and accident investigation outcomes,
  • Planning Trenching Works,
  • Soil Mechanics,
  • Soils classification & Conditions Affecting Stability,
  • Trench and Excavation Support Systems, and
  • Trench rescue.

Each of these areas can be broken down even further but would relate to much reading.


METHODS OF DELIVERY:

The methods of delivery will include;

  • Face to face tutorials and discussion,
  • Audio visual,
  • Theoretical situation discussion.
  • Practical creating and supporting excavations in the strata types found in the participant’s work area.
  • Practical hands on trenching scenarios including rescue.


WHAT LEARNING MATERIALS DO PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE:

All participants receive a full training manual covering the subjects treated in the training program.


WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO PARTICIPANTS HAVE FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF NEW SKILLS:

The course is delivered in a classroom type situation for the first 10 hours. The remaining 6 hours are the practical component looking at trench creation, trench stability and rescue.


WHAT FEEDBACK DO PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE:

At the completion of theory modules a questionnaire is completed to ensure participant understanding of the theory module.

Practical situations are debriefed at the completion of each exercise. 


HOW IS TERMINAL BEHAVIOUR MEASURED:

Assessment criteria will be by;

  • Written questionnaire (where literacy skills are a problem this is carried out in a one on one informal question and answer situation),
  • Practical exercises,
  • Workshops amongst the participants.
  • Group discussion,
  • Practical exercises and
  • Other assessment methodology.

All of the above will be as required to determine participants terminal behaviour.


WHAT FOLLOW UP AND ONGOING SUPPORT IS PROVIDED:

All participants and their employers are provided with contacts within Quantum Training so that if a problem arises they can contact us for advice and/or guidance.


DURATION OF TRAINING COURSE:

2 days for the basic course, but other VETAB registered units of competency can be attached to the course.


FEE STRUCTURE:

Course costs are $1950.00 (GST exempt) per day with up to 10 candidates attending the course. Preferred maximum number for the course is 10 to 12 participants. Extra candidates will be charged at $195.00 per candidate per day.
Our standard fee of $150.00 per day for travel and accommodation apply to all courses. This fee is reduced to $100.00 where the client supplies power and water to connect to.

Clients are requested to supply materials for practical component of the training course. A list of those requirements are forwarded when the course is being finalised.
